Shigatze literally means “fertile land” in Tibetan language. It is the second largest city in Tibet. It is also the official residence of the Panchen Lama (a reincarnation of Buddha of Everlasting Light), who ranks next to Dalai Lama in Tibet. The city, with a population of 609,228, is located at the junction of two rivers of the Nyang Chu and the Yarlong Tsangpo. Since the 14th century, Shigatze has been the political, economical and religious center in the southern Tibet. Now this 500-year-old city is a very popular city for the tourists from all over the world. |
