Yamdrok Tso Lake

With in the boundary of Nankartse, the Yamdrok Lake covers an area of 800 sq. km. with 4400 m above sea level. Yamdrok means the upper pastureland and “Tso” means sea in Tibetan. When overlooking the Yamdrok Tso Lake, it may be thought as if a gigantic sapphire inland in a surrounding of mountains, which look extremely beautiful.

The Yamdrok Yumtso is rich in hydroelectric power. The drop between the surface of the lake to the Yarlung Tsangpo River at the foot of the mountain falls over 800 m. Yamdrok Yumtso Power Station at such a high altitude is well known in the world. To the south of the lake, is the Samding Monastery with a history of over 300 years, which is about 30 km. away from Nankartse, standing grand and magnificent as the seat of Dorje Phakmo, the woman Living Buddha.
